    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I was 22 years old. I had no symptoms what so ever. All I did was feel a golf ball size lump on my collar bone while i went to rub my shoulder one night out with friends. Told my dad, he said to let it wait a week and see if it goes down before I tell mom. It didnt go down. We went to the doctor, he sent me right away for a chest xray and blood work. I was then referred to an oncologist and the whole time I kept thinking that it wasnt serious. Met with a very nice doctor who sent me for a biopsy "just to see".

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a lymph node taken out of my neck and it wasnt as bad as I was expecting. I passed out when my dad removed my bandage the next day but overall, easy compared to everything else. I have a pretty unrecognizable scar there now.

    Health insurance issue

    Oh No

I was finished with school 2 weeks prior, so I was no longer able to be under my parents insurance...so no insurance = nightmare. But that was just the beginning. Let the bills start piling up!

    Relationship issues

    Oh No

Boyfriend broke up with me after 7 years...he couldnt "handle" seeing me go through this. He then started dating someone else a week later. Right.

    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

I had the first power port put in. I woke up and it was very uncomfortable because they put it in my chest. I could not disguise it because it was a large bump with 3 dots on it that poked through my skin. After getting use to it, I knew how I could move without feeling it or it hurting but having it touched in the wrong way would hurt horribly. I do not like having a scar on my chest now from it but I am happy that my doctor suggested it because it saved me less scarring on my arms and hands and was so much simpler during treatment.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I had 6 months of chemo. Its very hard to describe. The day of receiving it, I just felt blah and felt like I wanted to throw up. Instantly things didnt smell the same, I had a dry mouth, I had an upset stomach but then other rounds I was constipated. Horrible feeling. I didnt want to eat anything and I would get really bad night sweats when trying to sleep. I didnt start losing my hair until round 2 or 3 and it wasnt even that much..but I also avoided brushing my hair or washing it. I bought wigs before it started to fall out so that kind of helped. I never let anyone see me without any hair. I didnt even look at myself in the mirror before I threw a wig on. It got really hot wearing them in the summer but I liked being able to buy different haircolors and try them out, something I never would have risked doing before since I had naturally blonde hair. I got sick a few times, but I learned not to eat anything greasy prior to treatment and freeze pops were my best friend during. I was always tired, but I still worked 2 jobs. I didnt lose weight, but gained and now I am having trouble losing it..even 4 years later. But my doctor said that that is probably why I did so well beating cancer, having more weight on my bones.

    Hair loss (alopecia)

    Side Effects

Probably the worst side effect because you cant disguise it. My hair still isnt the same as it was before and I had beautiful hair. Products I use to use do not work anymore. One day Ill get the hang of the new wavy do that I have now.

After only 2 rounds, after a scan, looks like the cancer was gone. Just needed the next few rounds to make sure.

    Taste change/loss

    Side Effects

I use to hate pickles. Now I love them. I was given sprite during treatment to help with upset stomach, I can not even sip any sort of lime soda now without getting chills and nauseous.

    Hair is back

    Celebration

Came back super soft and I remember noticing it around my forehead first and showed my mom all excited. It came in super dark and once it got a little longer, very curly. Now it is around my shoulders and it has no curl :( That was the only thing that I was excited for..going through all that XXX and to have hopefully beautiful wavy hair.
