    Diagnosed

    Oh No

Since I had no history of any types of cancer in my family, it came as a total surprise to be diagnosed with Stage II Pancreatic cancer. The doctor had to repeat it three times to me about what kind of tumor it was and where it was. Total shock.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

I don't think anyone can ever prepare you for what takes place to your internal digestive system when a Whipple procedure takes place. I was one of the lucky ones, I did not get an infection from the reconstruction of the digestive system. But the process of eating food again took several months (got to have a feeding tube for two months after), and having serious heartburn as a side effect is not pleasant. But my tumor was totally self-contained and I was blessed not to require any chemo or radiation. Five years out, I have some sugar issues but for the most part I do feel great.

    Went as Expected: Neutral/NA
    Minimal Recovery: Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Neutral/NA

    Weight loss

    Side Effects

Due to a very long recovery process, I did not get in the walking I used to do. I did develop bone density loss. Lost 25 pounds (which for the most part have regained now). Have some sugar issues that my doctor is convinced come from the pancreatic surgery. Can't eat some of the foods I love unless I want to experience heartburn. I've learned to regulate my moods also, if I get upset, the spincter muscle contracts and brings on heartburn as well. Keep my stress level low all the time.

I've had two granddaughters born in those five years, the loves of my life. Each day is a gift of life from God.
