    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I've heard that kidney cancer doesn't have a lot of early symptoms and often missed for awhile. Here's how mine was found. I'd had back pain and an xray of my spine showed degenerative disc disease so I always attributed any back pain to that (plus being overweight). In August 2007 I started have an ache at night in my left thigh that wasn't a pain but an ache so bad that I would cry. I figured I'd get to the doctor eventually and tell her about it but I wasn't in a real hurry. Well, my cat intervened. For the 2nd year in a row in September she gave me poison ivy up my arm and across my face. Since this was the 2nd year, I was ready to toss the cat out of the family! I had to make an emergency trip to my doctor to get medicine before I went blind. While there I mentioned the ache in my leg and she suggested an MRI since we'd done the xray route. A few days later a call came to have the MRI redone as there was a shadow. Three days before my grandson was born came the almost positive diagnosis of kidney cancer. The cat is still around, I figured she really did save my life; but I am very careful at poison ivy time to not get too close! Now if I could just stop weeding where there is poison ivy growing..........

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

After 4 years of follow-up scans, it has returned and spread to other adrenal gland, pancreas and lung. Not major sizes but it's there!

    Sutent 50 - 4weeks on / 2 weeks off

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

First 4 weeks was no problem. Didn't even feel like I was on medicine as there were no real side effects. Second month they appeared and were inconvenient but manageable. Third month, hand & foot syndrome so severe that dose reduced to 37.5.

    Easy to Do: Strongly Agree
    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree

    Cancer is shrinking

    Celebration

After another 3 months of Sutent - and on a reduced dosage - so happy to get CT scan results that show adrenal gland tumor is shrinking again and the pancreas/lung spots are stable. Yay! It's great to feel that things seem to be going well again; unfortunately in the back of my mind I know the other shoe will drop sometime, but for now cannot let that overwhelm the positives of today! Thank the Lord for all his goodness and strength. I wish the same for all cancer patients and their families.
