    hollow core needle biopsy

    Procedure or Surgery

Very nervous and worried before the procedure, but it wasn't painful and recovery was quick. Waiting for the results was the hardest part.

    Sentinel lymph node biopsy

    Procedure or Surgery

VERY painful, but I was forewarned by several individuals on my care team. Lymph nodes were clear - yay!

    Second lumpectomy or complete mastectomy.

    Decision Point

Clear margins were not obtained in the lumpectomy. A second lumpectomy may or may not remove the remaining cancer, and even if it did I would be required to receive radiation treatments. A mastectomy would remove all remaining breast tissue and likely eliminate the necessity for radiation.

    Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

As expected. Chest drains were a real hassle for 2 weeks post surgery. Returned to work full-time the day after drains were removed.

    Hormone therapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Anti-hormone therapy started as soon as mastectomy was healed. Causes intense hot flashes multiple times per day which result in disturbed sleep pattern. Feel exhausted about 50% of the time. Fortunately, no weight gain, but definitely notice a difference in skin, hair and other physical aspects. But I would still choose to take this therapy for the requisite 5 years rather than opting to "do nothing".

    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree

    Breast Reconstruction (Implant)

    Procedure or Surgery

Process began on the same day as mastectomy. Very uncomfortable for a few days post surgery. Initial healing went well and then a long waiting period before the rest of the reconstruction process could proceed.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

Two additional plastic surgeries to finish reconstruction, including a skin graft for nipple reconstruction. The skin graft site was one of the most annoying parts of the entire journey - very uncomfortable and sensitive for a long time. Probably would pass on this portion of the process were I to have another mastectomy/reconstruction.
