    Misdiagnosed

    Oh No

dermatologists missed the call in 2002 when they advised me to "keep an eye it" after I showed them what turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma on my left facial cheek...I got a second opinion in 2005 from a different dermatologist, who quickly and casually called it skin cancer, and did a simple excision. unfortunately, and unknown to us all due to the derm doc's failure to do a Mohs surgery, they missed additional SCC cells, which had metastasized into my nerves and parotid gland....by the summer of 2006 I developed facial paralysis, which led to neurological evals to rule out Bells Palsey... we didn't get any good help until we went to Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN, where my symptoms were correctly diagnosed by their ENT department.

Surgery to remove cancer that has spread

    Procedure or Surgery

surgery went 15 hours to remove cancer and do reconstruction on my face....lost all nerves in left side of face, and mouth only opened about an inch...still like that...hard to move food around while eating, and I have to eat much more slowly and pay attention to avoid accidental choking.

    Went as Expected: Strongly Agree
    Minimal Recovery: Agree
    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Neutral/NA

    Celebration

knowing what to expect, doing routine dermatology visits quarterly to find and treat new skin cancers has become the new normal these past 5 years...glad to be alive and able to keep checking things
