    Diagnosed

    Oh No

Oh no, that wasn't the hernia or testicular infection we were hoping for. Diagnosis was swift with no time to think. We had a follow up appointment with the urologist for and he ordered an ultrasound on a Friday, Monday morning at 9am my cell phone was ringing and the Dr. was on the line wanting to know why my husband wasn't answering his phone at work. I got the call that started with the words, He has cancer, we need to do surgery today, please pick him up from work and come straight to my office, don't go home, don't stop and eat, surgery is needed asap.

    Removal of testicle

    Procedure or Surgery

Men, I have to say we women are much more prepared to deal with a surgery like this due to being more vocal about our reproductive system. This surgery itself was fairly simple from a procedural point but from a man's personal point of view it's not the easiest one to undergo for obvious psychological and emotional reasons.

    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

The experience of port implant would have been easier had chemo not started right away and the body could have had a couple of weeks for the incision to heal properly. There was no infection, chemo just made it harder for anything heal from the two surgeries that were done the previous week. There will also be a scar between the collarbone and shoulder and the port was obvious if you knew it was there. He said he could always feel it when he had to turn his head in either direction to look completely to the right or left. The port was a big help toward the end of chemo due to not being able to successfully access a vein for treatment without the port. And it was temporary, six months after implant it was removed.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

BEP chemo, 4 rounds, between the 3rd and 4th round the Dr. ordered a CT scan to evaluate treatment and decided the 4th round was necessary. He also consulted with the University of Indiana and determined we did not have to go there for additional surgery to remove lymph nodes. This chemo was very rough for my husband. Most days were bad ones that we just got through.

    Easy to Do: Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Strongly Disagree

    Other

    Side Effects

All of them, I really can't name one that was more prominent by the time we finished chemo. Hair loss, nauseau, sensitivity to noise, neuropathy, streaking on the arms, mouth sores, bowel problems, lethargy, sleeplessness, I could go on and on, everyday seemed to be something new. Some people reported not having many side effect. Unfortunately we weren't that lucky. You know you are getting a little too used to a side effect when you're driving the hour from home to the dr's office for treatment and in the back of your mind you're thinking ahead to where's a good spot to pull off the road so he can get sick.
