    Colon surgery (colectomy or hemicolectomy)

    Procedure or Surgery

Although surgery was supposedly a success it has left me with an enormous hernia, about the size of a cantaloupe melon, which is extremely ugly. I dread the thought of having something else implanted, like the mesh the surgeon talks about, after I finish chemo. Another procedure, for which I don't have the money or feel I have the strength, another implanted "something" for my body to have to adjust to, etc. etc. We will see about this one. But yes, basically the surgery went well and they removed my cecum and gall bladder, plus 6 lymph nodes, 5 of which were malignant.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I never felt sick before I began chemotherapy. I have felt, for the last 6 months, that the chemo is killing me faster than the cancer. It has been devastating. I would trade loosing my hair in exchange for the permanent neuropathy in both my hands and feet, amongst many other nasty side effects, any time. As I approach the last treatment, and after a clean Pet scan, I cannot see any monitoring on the horizon that fills me with confidence. I know the blood tests, and my constantly rising CEA levels, are most unreliable as to evidence of what's going on inside. I would love to know of anyone else's experience whereby they have found a consistent and reliable procedure for monitoring the evolution of this insidious disease. Pet scans, as we all know, only indicate problems once they have become impossible to cure. Does anyone out there in this club we never asked to join, know of any method of tracking the progress or otherwise, of our challenge?

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Devastating side effects probably exacerbated by not being informed that the chunk they removed had the water-absorbing function so had constant diarrhea which made things much worse than they would have been without that debilitating side effect. 18 months later and taking psyllium caps for 24 hrs and the problem was relieved. Hallelujah! Might have made a significant difference to my ability to cope with chemo had I know before.
