    Open chest biopsy

    Procedure or Surgery

Preferred incision on chest instead of the neck to obtain a biopsy of the tumor in my chest. The surgery went well but it was very painful for approximately a week and a half to two weeks. (Bruising, swelling, pain...lots of discomfort).

    Diagnosed

    Oh No

The open chest biopsy determined that I have lymphoma. The diagnosis was a wake up call and notice of the long road ahead.

    Decision Point

Once I received information regarding the treatment plan from a local oncologist, I sought a second opinion through Duke University Medical Center. I wanted to ensure what I was being told from my local oncologist was consistent with that of a large teaching hospital. While the R-CHOP and radiation was a common treatment plan, the length of therapy was not. A word of advice...always seek a second opinion.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I experienced my first treatment session on Friday. The R-CHOP session was scheduled for eight hours. While the session lasted eight hours, I did not receive the entire treatment because of minor side effects of hives/rash and sore throat from the Rituxan. The nurse slowed the drip, gave me Benedryl and scheduled me for the remainder of the treatment for Monday. Then the Neulasta shot on Tuesday.

Medicine for low white blood cell count

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I received a Neulasta shot today as a preventative measure of keeping the white blood cells up. It is believed this medication will regenerate the white blood cells that will be destroyed from chemotherapy. Unlike my chemo sessions, no side effects immediately after the shot in the back of my arm. The nurse also suggested the stomach as a injection site. While I've been told this shot can make every bone in your body hurt, I am praying this will not be my case.

    Achy bones and joints

    Side Effects

The neulasta shot helped me maintain an appropriate white blood cell count. However, I experienced lots of bone aches and joint pain.

Second of six chemotherapy treatments. I completed the second R-CHOP treatment within seven hours. No side effects!
