    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a lymph node removed from under my right arm. The doctors thought it was just a normal node, and it turned out to be cancerous.

    Diagnosed

    Oh No

When the biopsy came back cancerous, my whole family was in shock. My cancer cells were doubling every 36 hours, so we had to act fast. I was diagnosed with Stage IV Burkitt's Lymphoma and it had already spread all over my stomach area and in my spinal fluid.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I had to be in the hospital for a week at a time, receiving chemotherapy 24 hours a day for 7 days a week. I never reacted well to the drugs and the nausea medicine never worked. I spent most days sleeping and receiving benadryl and adavan to help me sleep, but I still threw up most days and never felt good. After a week of chemo, I would go home for two weeks to recover. Most of the time I would end up back in the hospital again because of fevers and low counts. Typically I would have about 2 "good" days where I could go out to lunch or leave the house in each 3 week cycle.

    Infection

    Side Effects

About three months later, I got a very bad infection in my abdomen because of my diminished immune system. I began to have intense abdominal cramps and went in for a CT scan.

    Struggled with multiple abdominal drains

    Oh No

They tried to drain the infection a couple of times and left abdominal drains in my body for weeks at a time. I was constantly on vicadin and oxycotten to try to alleviate the pain

    Procedure or Surgery

The doctors tried to do a laproscopic surgery to drain the infection, but everything was too swollen and they could not tell which abdominal organs were which.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

A few weeks later they did a full abdominal surgery to get rid of the infection. They made a 10 inch incision in my abdomen and found that the infection was coming from my bowels. A fistula had formed between my bowel and small intestine, and this was causing the infection. They took out about a foot and a half of my intestine and closed my abdomen. I was in the hospital for about 3 weeks following the surgery and it took me a couple of months to recover enough to do daily activities.
