    Diagnosed

    Oh No

What to do, decisions to make. I researched. Decided for a Mastectomy but my doctor talked me out of that decision.

    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

The doctor did not get it all. She told me there would be a chance this would happened but I was under the impression that they check the tissue while still on the table, not two weeks later.

    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Ok, now I have had two lumpectomy's and now I look like a freak with half of my breast and nipple missing. Also, now I'm told I need radiation treatments.

    Rash

    Side Effects

Several months after radiation my skin around the area kept changing. It became hard and lumpy and it hurt. After my doctor ignoring my complaints I went on to see other specialists. After a biopsy of the area I now had morrphia which was a reaction to the radiation. I now needed the full mastectomy that I originally wanted in the first place in order to get rid of the morphia.

    Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

The procedure went well, but due to the morrphia I had healing problems and ended up with staff infection. They had to remove so much tissue that I was left with a big hole in my chest and little options for reconstruction. It was a very painful and long process.

    Breast Reconstruction (Flap)

    Procedure or Surgery

The flap procedure originally went well but after a week tissue started to die, infection set in again. More tissue died and much of the flap had to be removed. Still left with a big hole we had to look at other options. I had IV antibiotics at home with visiting nurses and wound care specialists. It was really crazy.

    Other

    Side Effects

Major muscle cramps in the breast every time I have to use my arm. Even for small things like dusting and mopping. It is like having charlie horses in your breast, brings tears to my eyes at times.

    Fat Grafting

    Procedure or Surgery

I have had several sections of fat grafting trying to get the shape and size to be similar to my other breast. These procedures are very easy compared to any other. But, the process and results are slow and it takes several sessions to accomplish small steps.

    Making a new nipple

    Procedure or Surgery

I am preparing for this procedure to be done in two weeks. It will then take a 3 month recovery then they will tatoo on the color and areola. I am very very excited that this will finally all be over by Christmas.

Find out all the details, possible side effects to every procedure

    Decision Point

There was so much I did not know going into each procedure along my path. Unfortunately I had to find out the hard way about each and every side effect or each possible thing that could go wrong. I feel that things are not discussed fully as the doctor's don't want to scare you off but I'd rather made the decision being fully prepared for what might happen, rather than not to have a clue that it could happen. Also, always go with your gut. If I had done that in the first place I would not have gone through this long painful journey. I can say I am cancer free and I am happy for that.
