    was watched by a dr.

    Other Care

When they found a lump on my thyroid I was pregnant so my endocrynologist chose to watch it. We took biopsies several times over the next year and measurements to make sure it didn't grow.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a total removal of my thyroid, which was my choice. It was a good thing I told the dr to do just that because one side (lobe) had grown over my esophagus and he had to remove the entire thing.

    Diagnosed

    Oh No

In the recovery room the dr told me they didn't find any cancer but they had a few more tests to run and would know in a few days for sure. I got the call 4 days later that said they found cancer encapsulated in the thyroid tissue they took out. He recommended an oncologist for me to see and wanted me to follow his recommendations.

    Internal radiation

    Radiation

I took a high dose of radioactive iodine and had to be away from my 4 kids and husband for 7 days. I moved in with my parents (70 miles away) for a week and was very ill. I had to drink lots of fluids and suck on sour candy so the radiation wouldn't settle in my salivary glands and would work it's way out of my system. I lost all sense of taste and to this day I can't suck on lemon drops or jolly ranchers. My kids think it is funny, and now it is a joke between us, but they used to make me sick to my stomach to even see the packages in the store.

    Physician follow up

    Other Care

I have had many follow up appointments and several body scans over the past 6 years, but so far nothing has resurfaced in my body. I still see an endocrinologist once a year and they monitor my TSH level and keep close tabs on everything. I am truly blessed to be able to share my story.
