    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I was feeling lousy for more than two months, my dental assistant said "Why don't you go to your M.D. We just had a cancellation for this afternoon." So I called the clinic and they saw me, took blood sample and arranged for me to take my first ambulance ride (actually, it was my second ambulance ride) 80 miles to Duluth, where I was admitted. The oncologist advised me that I might want to be transferred to Mayo Clinic / Rochester Methodist Hospital to have confirmation of Diagnosis and start of therapy. So, back in the ambulance and down to Rochester, arriving about 11:30 pm got to have a ride in a gurney up to 7th floor. My room looked out on the side of the Kahler motel. I could watch the pigeons fly off the roof whenever a medivac helicopter or a falcon flew by. Spent most of my daytime being evaluated by the medical intern/residents, with tests of every system, with blood draws, medication taking, and going through chemo three times, with hair loss being a natural part of the experience, along with some significant nausea the first few days of each round of chemotherapy. Finally, I was ready for a stem cell transplant, which I had around Halloween . My brother Dave was my donor and life-saver! I was able to leave the hospital for a few weeks, where I stayed at the Serenity House with my care giver, Ruth. I missed ~ eight months of my routine, with my sister and brother-in-law adopting my Labrador , Phoebe, for the time when I was away.

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

It was a tough few months, but look at the alternative...I wouldn't be sitting in my easy chair with my dog at my feet in my house. so, Yes, it was worth it. Am so glad that I have good medical insurance to help with the expense of all the care!
