    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Lumpectomy was done September 2009. One positive lymph node out of five. Recovery from the surgery was uneventful. Dealing with the drains was the worst part.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I had A-C for 4 cycles followed by Taxol and Herceptin for 4 cycles. I continued to work and gained 5 pounds during treatment. My taste buds were not affected. Tiredness was the main side effect and nausea.

    Heart problems/heart damage

    Side Effects

Herceptin gave me heart failure which I experienced as shortness of breath and tiredness. I saw a cardiologist who put me on heart medication (Coreg and Enalopril) and my Herceptin treatments were put on hold until my heart function improved. It was scary to resume treatments but my heart function did not decrease again and I was monitored with echocardiograms before every subsequent treatment.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

After a year and a half of treatments: chemo, radiation and Herceptin I was finally done. I had a party to celebrate my End of Treatments and to thank all my friends and family for their support.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

This time I was put on a different chemo mix of Taxotere and Carboplatin with Herceptin again for my HER2 trait again. The chemo was much harder on me this time around. I lost weight instead of gaining and needed 2 blood transfusions during my treatment cycle.

    Other

    Side Effects

I suffered from excessive tearing due to the Taxotere drug. My eyes were constanting watering which made me look like I was crying, especially in cold or windy conditions. I had surgery to place tubes in my tear ducts, which helped. After 3 months the tearing continued although not as bad as before. I had the tubes removed after 8 months.
