    Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Everything seemed so rushed. There wasn't time to evaluate what was going to happen. Questions to my surgeon were not answered to my satisfaction and options were never discussed. Reconstructive surgery was not even considered during the modified radical mastectomy Side effects from the removal of so many lymph nodes and nerve damage from the surgery caused burning and pain for many months.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

My oncologist suggested that I participate in a clinical study of different doses of chemotherapy. The study was to see what effect high doses of chemo would have breast cancer. I agreed and was selected for the experimental protocol. I received double the number of chemo courses and each course was double the amount of chemo. The first few rounds of chemo were difficult and each additional round became even harder as my was body was weakened by the treatment. The company I worked for had no short or long term disability insurance and I needed the income so I had to continue working during the treatment. There were many days when my goal at work was to not fall out of my chair. The treatments lasted 6 months and when I had 4 or 5 treatments left, I told my oncologist that I couldn't continue the treatments but of course he insisted that I had to complete the study. I would be very careful about participating in an experimental protocol.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

I had a party for myself. I called it "A Gathering of Friends". I invited 48 people and 45 of them came. It was the first party I ever had and it was so much fun to see the support and love from so many wonderful people who had touched my life. People who love you make all the difference.

I threw away all of the hats and scarves I wore when my hair was gone.
