    Oh No

A cold nodule was found on my neck during a routine exam and it was determined to be growing. I was 22 years old and in college at the time finishing up my Junior year.

    FINE NEEDLE BIOPSY

    Procedure or Surgery

This was a traumatic experience for me as it was not expected to occur until I was in the specialist's office with my parents. The results were inconclusive.

    Radioactive ablation

    Radiation

I was given the ablation treatment and developed paratitis (infected salivary glands) within 24 hours. After these issues passed, I was good to go.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a partial thyroidectomy and then a week later, the rest of my thyroid was removed since papillary carcinoma was found after I was in recovery from my first surgery. I was told before the surgeries that the possibility existed that I would lose my ability to sing. This helped strengthen my faith in God and rely more on my family/friends for support. My voice was mainly unaffected execept for a minor resonance change. The outcome was wonderful as the surgeon said that my cancer had been completely removed.

    Cancer is back/Recurred

    Oh No

A couple of months after my lovely wedding and honeymoon, I woke up feeling a lump in my throat that I knew needed immediate attention. The doctor said I had a thyroglossal duct cyst - most likely present in my body since utero and now being expressed for an unknown reason.

    Cyst biopsy

    Procedure or Surgery

This biopsy showed that thryroid cancer was present in the cyst which is an extremely rare occurence that warranted a brainstrom session of the best of the best medical minds in Colorado.

    Health insurance issue

    Oh No

The insurance was willing to cover me at Cancer Centers of America if that is where I decided to go, but upon further investigation, the insurance company refused this type of comprehensive care in my particular case. This brough my husband and I back to the drawing board for options. We found a specialized surgeon in Aurora, CO who had never seen this kind of presentation before, but he was willing to help me. He said that I may lose my vocal ability but that he would remove the cancer.

    Celebration

My dear friends blessed me with a night in a recording studio singing and laying down a CD of favorites. I knew in my heart that God would be protecting my voice but savored the experience.
