    Diagnosed

    Oh No

In Dec 2011, I had a CBC and my blood counts came back abnormal- low white blood count, red blood count, and platelets. Also high liver enzymes. Was retested and then sent to a hematologist. After many additional test they did a bone marrow biopsy and I was told I had AML Leukemia. Totally shocked!

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I chose to have treatment at Moffit Hospital in Tampa. I was put in the hospital for a month and went through intense chemotherapy treatments. I had several blood and platelet transfusions while in the hospital, however I responded very well to the chemotherapy and a repeat bone marrow biopsy showed the chemo had put me in clinical remission. I still needed 4 months of outpatient chemotherapy just to be sure. This is standard treatment. I had a total of 34 bags of chemo between the induction and consolidation phase of my treatment.

    Easy to Do: Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Agree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Strongly Disagree

    Infection

    Side Effects

Most of my treatments were uneventful. I did get an infection during my last round of chemo which landed me in the hospital for another 5 days. Even though I had some side effects (spiked a few fevers, several chest xrays, catscans, etc.) I did not get too sick from the chemo. I took the antiobiotics and neupogen shots each month and I felt a little more tired than usual but overall I did pretty well.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

I finally finished my consolidation treatment with my last week of chemo on my 44th birthday. It was time to let me body start recuperating (and my hair to grow back). I went back to work in June, 2012 after being off for 6 months. A little bit of normalcy!!!

    Other

    Other Care

I now just receive monthly blood tests to make sure every thing is still normal. I will have to do this for several years. I thank God that I had good cytogenetics and did not require a bone marrow transplant. I just thank God for every day I have and continue to pray for a sustained remission!
