    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I found a lump in my right breast and immediately went to the doctor, who ordered a mammogram. I was due for the mammogram in one month, and there had been nothing suspicious a year ago. When it came back positive, I was referred to a surgeon. He said since I appear to be so healthy, he thought there was a good chance that the lump was benign but the biopsy would tell for sure. We were all shocked to get a malignant diagnosis. I never imagined that I would be on this train.

    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Since my cancer was determined to be Stage 1 with no lymph node involvement, the surgeon said I was a good candidate for breast conservation. Although he had spoken of mastectomy with reconstruction previously, I was happy to hear him say that a lumpectomy would be fine. I do wonder if I would have less chance of recurrence in the same breast if I had chosen mastectomy. I hope that there will be no recurrence anywhere! My nipple is somewhat retracted, and is very numb. The scar is not bad and will likely fade with time.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I have only had two treatments as of today (9-10-12). I am getting carboplatin and docetaxel. My main side effects have been nausea, fatigue, mouth irritation (not sores), hair loss, and constipation.

    Targeted therapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I am getting Herceptin for the HER2. Since I am getting chemotherapy at the same time, I am not sure if any of the side effects are from the Herceptin. I will know more about my reactions to the Herceptin after the chemotherapy is over and the Herceptin continues until July 2013.

An additional targeted therapy for the HER2.

    Clinical Trial

It is called Pertuzamab. In the clinical trial, I do not actually know if I am getting the targeted therapy or a placebo.
