    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I had my 40 year mammogram in May 2010. The nurse said I had spots on both breasts but not to worry because 80% of spots turn out to be nothing. I made a 6 month follow-up visit. In December the Dr. reading my mammogram said he definitely wanted to biopsy the right side but didn't feel the need to biopsy the left. I made the appointment and told the surgeon that for my own piece of mind I wanted to have both breast biopsied. I had to reschedule my appointment for two weeks later. When my results came back my doctor told me that I had cancer in both breasts and that it was actually the left side (the side they weren't going to biopsy) was the worse side. In the right breast I had ductal carcinoma in situ (stage 0), which means that the cancer was contained in the duct that it had originated in. In the left breast was invasive ductal carcinoma (stage 1), which means the cancer had started to spread outside of the duct. If I had not gotten the biopsy on the left breast my cancer journey would have been alot worse then it was.

    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a lumpectomy on both breast and 2 lymph nodes removed under the left arm and 1 lymph node under the right arm. The questions that were asked here were kind hard to answer. Because they are not considering all of the emotions and fear the go along with everything that is experienced. Did the surgery goes as expected? I think by the doctors standards it went as expected but for me I had the fear of not knowing if they were going to find cancer in my lymph nodes. Minimal recovery? I had a lumpectomy on both sides so there was a little more involved with recovery because I had to be careful with both sides. Minimal impact to daily life? Again I had to becareful of both sides. My husband had to wash my hair for the fist week and half because I couldn't lift my arms very high. Lifting anything, opening car doors were also difficult. I am a massage therapist and use my arms and chest muscles alot so that was extra healing time I needed.

    Went as Expected: Agree
    Minimal Recovery: Agree
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Agree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I was never sick or nausiated. Some side effects that I had were weird, like the tips of my fingers and toes peeled, my eyes leaked, but then I had sores in my mouth after the 1st and forth treatments. Lost of taste after the 1st treatment. I did have have alot of emtional problems with losing my hair. I think that is what made it real that I had cancer.

    Easy to Do: Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Agree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree
