    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I was diagnosed by a chest x-ray taken because I had a chronic cough. The lymph nodes in my chest, neck and under my right arm were affected by the cancer. I had symptoms of Hodgkin disease for about 4 years before diagnosis.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I had six months of ABVD chemo, every other week. I mostly worked full time, although I could arrange my hours to the times I felt better and take days off when I was sick. I felt good on chemo weeks, because of the steroids. BUt once the steroids were done and I started Neupogen shots I was tired, sick and hurting.

    Cancer is back/Recurred

    Oh No

At my three month checkup, an area of activity showed up in my pelvis/hip area, where I had never had cancer before. We waited to see if it was on the six month scan. By then I had pain in the area. The activity in the bone was abnormal for Hodgkin so the doctors decided to do some biopsies. I had two needle biopsies and one by surgery. No cancer was found. By my one-year scans, the cancer had returned to my lymph nodes, in my groin near the hip area that was affected.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I had three sessions of ICE chemo. It was stronger than my original chemo and I was more tired and sick. I lost all my hair this time. I could not work most of the time.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I had an auto transplant at the U of MN. It involved chemo and stem cell transplant using my own cells. I had to take six months off work and move close to the hospital. This treatment made me very sick and took more than a year to feel like myself again. It also caused after effects of early menopause, thyroid problems and osteoporosis. It also saved my life.

    External radiation

    Radiation

I had 15 low dose radiation treatments to my hip area, which was never proven to be cancer. However, it got better with chemo and I told my doctor that if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck. The radiation took about 10 minutes each day, but it was 2 hours away from my home one-way, so that daily drive was taxing. I had a small sunburn by the end, which lasted about 1 month.
