    splenectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

    My splenectomy was supposed to involve a 5 day hospital stay, which turned into 15, thanks to pneumonia and a wound infection. Luckily, living without a spleen hasn't impacted my immune system significantly. Get vaccinated!

    External radiation

    Radiation

    I had 20 treatments of mantle field radiation. Towards the end, eating was painful, and my skin was burnt. Those side effects were short lived. I did end up with a sluggish thyroid, and have to take a pill daily, most likely for the rest of my life.
