    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

My husband went to the ER early on Easter Morning, 2012, with what we thought was appendicitis. The doctor thought so too and went in laproscopicly for the appendectomy. He saw blood filling my husband's abdomen so closed off the laproscopy and opened him up, revealing a ruptured 12cm tumor that turned out to be GIST.

    Went as Expected: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Recovery: Neutral/NA
    Minimal Side Effects: Agree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree

    Where to go for care

    Decision Point

GIST is very rare and finding an "expert" was impossible. We settled for Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Our oncologist there is definately NOT an expert in GIST, but she and CTCA in general specialize in late stage, hard to treat, and rare forms of cancer.

    Depression/Anxiety

    Side Effects

Ryan, my husband, has constant diarrhea, fatigue, stomach pain, and nausea. He is depressed all the time--we are working on finding a med that will help him with the depression, and he has countless meds to help with all the other side effects.

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

Most recent CT scan, in August 2012, shows growth in the lymph nodes of the chest and neck. Ryan returns at the end of October for a PET, CT, and biopsy.
