    Misdiagnosed

    Oh No

May 2009 - September 2009. I had about 5 months of increasing pain. I was misdiagnosed with constipation, stress, and IBS. I was even referred to a psychologist when I told my doctor that I wanted to have a colonoscopy. I did everything suggested. I took all of the medication. I already wasn't really eating much because I would have extreme pain when I would eat. Eventually, I ended up at the emergency room in excruciating pain. I had a blockage in my sigmoid colon. For the next three days I was subjected to enemas and every oral medication used to make you have a bowel movement, including magnesium citrate. All this accomplished was increasing my pain. Finally, a colonoscopy was done after a barium enema failed to cause me to have a bowel movement. I was scheduled to have surgery the next day. The surgeon said I needed to have surgery immediatelly, but he had been at the hospital for 16 hours already. He didn't want anyone else to do my surgery. I was lucky to get one of the best colon surgeons in my region.

    Colon surgery (colectomy or hemicolectomy)

    Procedure or Surgery

During surgery I had so much swelling that my skin couldn't connect for the surgeon to close, so I was placed into a chemical coma for 3 days with a wound vac. After I woke up I had no idea what had happened and had to have everything explained to me over and over by my family.

    I GOT MARRIED

    Celebration

Our original date was October, 31, 2009. With my diagnosis I knew that the wedding we had planned was just not happening. There was no way I could get everything done in my condidtion after my surgery. So, Eddy and I went to the court house and got married on October 21, 2009. My husband has been my rock through everything.

    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

October 22, 2009 Since I had a port when I was a chile with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, I knew what to expect. When my oncologist said that he would suggest a port and began to explain why I stopped him and told him that I would insist that I get a port. Seriously, this is at least one thing that can make treatment easier.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I had FOLFOX6. I was scheculed for a treatment every 14 days for a total of 12 treatments. I had only 5 treatments before the oxaliplatin dosage had to be reduced. At the 9th treatment the oxaliplatin had to be omitted. I had both cold sensitivity and peripheral neuropathy. The 5-FU/leucovorin alone was a breeze. This was mostly due to the zofran and ativan. I had acute lymphoblastic leukemia as a child. I had two and a half years of chemo and 6 weeks of radiation treatments. Anti-nausea drugs were not avaialble for children 20 years ago. I must say that was have come a long way in managing the side effects of chemotherapy.

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

May 2010. About a six weeks after completing FOLFOX6 I had a PET scan that revealed a second tumor in my back. The tumor is located in my left psoas muscle between my aorta and spine. This tumor continues to cause me pain.

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

July 2011. A scan revealed a new tumor wrapped around my small intestine. I had to wait 8 weeks for surgery because I had been on avastin. Since the tumor was constricting my small intestine I was put on a liquid/puree diet.

Tumor removal from around small intestine.

    Procedure or Surgery

September 2011. The tumor wrapped around my small intestine was removed. I was hesitant about the surgery since the recovery after the last surgery was so difficult. This incision was about half the size and the recovery was not as difficult.

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

CT scan on October 18, 2012 showed two small spots on my lungs. The tumor in my back had no change. I saw my oncologist on October 23, 2012 and he was hopeful. He said that these "spots" were too small to biopsy and too small to be observed on a PET scan. So, all we can do is wait and see.
