    External radiation

I was 51 when I underwent 6 weeks of daily pelvic radiation for rectal cancer. Although my radiation oncologist scrupulously informed me of every possible side effect, he did not tell me that this would put me into menopause. I was menstruating regularly before this treatment and never had another period afterwards. Knowing this would not have caused me to decline the treatment, but it did seem like a glaring omission in otherwise thorough disclosures. I have the feeling my radiation oncologist was not comfortable talking about this.
