    Sense of peace

    Loss

Thought I would come out of surgery with reconstructed breast but now that's much further down the road because I'll need chemo and likely radiation.

    Dressings/bandages removed

    Oh No

High anxiety about having bandages removed. Wasn't prepared to see what was NOT there anymore. If surgery had gone as planned, I don't think I would have had a big issue with it but since they couldn't do the reconstruction, I couldn't bear to look.

    Decision Point

Finally had courage to look at the unbandaged area today. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be! There is actually something there as the plastic surgeon said she filled the tissue expanders half-way. Got the pathology report as well and confirmed that I made the right decision to have the bilateral mastectomy. DCIS was actually already developing in left breast and there were many micro-sattelite tumors growing around the one large tumor in the right breast. And, out of 13 lymph nodes they removed, 2 of them had cancer cells. So, good to know i made the right call! Now have to wait to meet with an oncologist.

    Other

    Procedure or Surgery

Had both of my drains removed and tissue expanders filled yesterday - YAY! Had heard that both processes would either hurt or be uncomfortable but they were neither. However, I will say I had an uncomfortable night - it felt like I had two heavy rocks sitting on my chest and it was rather painful trying to sleep, even with a bed wedge. They don't hurt when I'm sitting up though so that's good. Still a very strange feeling having these rather foreign lumps in my chest!!

    Tissue expanders filled

    Procedure or Surgery

Had both tissue expanders filled for the final time. I had heard that it would be uncomfortable and maybe painful but didn't imagine how painful it would actually be! I had no longer been taking the pain pills or Valium from the surgery but has to go back to taking them to deal with this. Got pretty down about this as I felt I had really been on the mend and getting stronger every day and felt this was a setback. Feels like there are 2 immovable boulders sitting onmy chest now.

    Decision Point

Had to make decision on whether to go forward with chemotherapy and radiation. Got conflicting recommendations on both! Decided to have chemo but not radiation. The recommended chemo treatment for me was 4 cycles of Taxotere/Cytoxan.
