    colonoscopy

    Procedure or Surgery

On August 13 I had a Colonoscopy because I have crohn's disease and it's been way over due. During the procedure they found out I have a structure in the large intestine, they also took some biopsies. This was about my 7 or 8th Colonoscopy and everything went well, didn't even think anything "could" be wrong.

    GI Dr. Chepyala

    Other Care

August 22, 2012 had an appointment with Dr. Chepyala to find out results of the colonoscopy and biopsy.. Dr Chepyala said the pathologist at St. Luke's said the biopsy "didn't look normal" and wanted a second opinion. Biopsy was sent to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) for them to look at. I was told it would take a week to hear back.

    Diagnosed

    Oh No

August 28, 2012 I received a phone call from Dr Chepyala's office that the pathologist at UIHC confirmed the biopsy is cancerous. Had an appointment set up for the next day to see an oncologist.

    Dr Zenk, Oncologist

    Other Care

Auguest 30, 2012 meet with Dr Zenk today to talkabout the cancer. Dr Zenk wants me to get a chest CT scan to see if the cancer has spread to liver. Went right to the hospital that afternoon to have CT! And the good news is, the cancer hasn't spread so next week I'll be meeting with a GI surgeon to schedule surgery to have the cancer removed.

    Dr. Keating, GI Surgeon

    Other Care

September 6, 2012 meet with Dr Keating to go over the surgery. Will have the right ascending colon (right hemicolectomy) removed next Thursday at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. I will be in the hospital 4 or 5 days. I feel good about for the most part. Will be off work for 4 to 6 weeks, don't like being away from work. I feel like I'm letting people down but I know I'm not. I look at it as a extended vacation, lol and I need one!

    Colon surgery (colectomy or hemicolectomy)

    Procedure or Surgery

Thursdays September 13, 2012 went to St. Luke's to have ascending colon removed. Got a epidural before the surgery to help with pain control. Surgery went OK, first night in the hospital went fast, don't remember much due to pain killers! Sunday morning I got to go home! Had about 12" of the colon removed and will hear back from the pathologist in a few days!

    Dr Zenk, Oncologist

    Other Care

September 24, 2012 meeting Dr Zenk to find out what the stage is, I think it's stage 3B cancer! Dr Zenk said it's is stage 3 and we talked about chemo treatments. Will have to have a port installed before chemo starts, will be done Wednesday. Not looking forward to having it done, oh well. Chemo could be every 2 weeks for 12 weeks. Maybe other options too but Dr Zenk has to talk to the GI doctor to find out if the meds work with Crohn's.

    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

August 26, 2012 went to St Luke's hospital to get a Bard Power Port inserted. Everything went well, I was uneasy when we got to the OR but the pain wasn't too bad. Home now and just taking things slow. Dr Keating gave me a script for pain pills to help with the pain I have in my abdomen due to coughing because of reactions from Influenza vaccine. It was hard sleeping last night because of the reaction from the vaccines I got the last few days, but I am feeling better today. Tomorrow I see my GI doctor (Dr Chepyala) and on Monday my girlfriend Angela and I get to do a Chemo info/training.

CALGB 80702 - "A Phase III Trial of 6 Versus 12 Treatments of Adjuvant FOLFOX Plus Celecoxib or Placebo for Patients with Resected Stage III Colon Cancer"

    Clinical Trial

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, and fluorouracil, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Celecoxib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. It is not yet known whether giving oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, and fluorouracil is more effective with or without celecoxib in treating colon cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying giving oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, and fluorouracil together to compare how well they work when given together with or without celecoxib in treating patients with stage III colon cancer previously treated with surgery. http://fightcolorectalcancer.org/images/posts/2011/09/80702_Patient_Guide_08152011.pdf

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Everything went good. Will have to go home with a pump to have Leucovorin infused over the next 46 hours.
