Surgery to remove cancer that has spread

    Procedure or Surgery

In 2011 I had a simple surgery to remove a mole and surrounding tissue. My lymph nodes were clear. However 4 months ago I found out the melanoma had actually travelled to my brain and I had two tumors. One was removed through surgery and the other remains.

I am taking Zelboraf to reduce the tumor that remains in my brain

    Clinical Trial

Zelboraf works to shrink the melanoma in the body. I am in a clinical trial to see how well it shrinks melanoma in the brain.

What to do about my job

    Decision Point

I have /had the best job as an art teacher . I am so tired now we had to get a long term sub for my classes. I teach Kindergarten, first and second graders and it is hard to be away. Because I am tired most of the time I try to save up my energy for my family. I have two boys 13 and 8 years old and in the afternoons and evenings I want to be able to spend time with them and my husband. I am afraid that if I go back to work I will be too exhausted to have any quality time with them. My principal and fellow teachers are so supportive, but they all keep wondering when I'm coming back.

    Laser surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a Gamma Knife treatment in Feb. 2013. The neurosurgeon that has been following my scans, found 2 new tumors in my brain. The procedure went very well and were not painful until it was over and I had a pretty tough headache when they removed the halo. A few pain killers and some rest were all I needed to. Feel better. My face swelled up and stayed that way for a few days, it was good just to stay home and have the down time. The best part about it ( other than the actual zapping of the cancer tumors) was that I was able to be off the Zelboraf for 5 whole days! I felt so great. I realized how much the side effects impact my life. Going back on was easier than when I started initially in July. I still experienced the side effects, but not to as big of an extent. Much better now, and cancer free!

Zelboraf. I have been taking it for over 2 1/2 years. It is working great! No new growth and no visible tumors for 15 months. I continue to deal with side effects daily...Especially sun exposure and memory issues.

    Integrative Medicine!!!!!

    Celebration

I had a skin rash for over a year. I saw dermatologists, family doctors and my oncologist. None of the solutions were helpful. I was prompted by friends to try acupuncture. On my first visit the doctor told me that most skin irritations are diet related. He recommended a big change in my diet. No Meat, dairy, caffeine, sugar, salt, alcohol, fried food. UGGG it was tough and I really hoped it wouldn't work...But it did! Rash gone and feeling way better. It has been 7 weeks and I am getting the hang of vegan eating and cooking. I call myself a reluctant vegan!
