    Diagnosed

    Oh No

We thought my daughter had a cold or allergy problems... A chest x-ray revealed a 6" tumor wrapped around her windpipe. She was 3 months shy of her 23rd birthday. Doctors had to determine what it was before they could treat it.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

Surgery was just to biopsy an enlarged lymph node on my daughter's clavicle... Turned out to be Hodgkin's.

    bone marrow biopsy

    Procedure or Surgery

This is a tough procedure for anyone --- especially a scared, young lady! She was in the oncologist's office, and they wouldn't let me stay with her. She was so scared for this procedure, but she made it through, and we were blessed with a clean biopsy!

    External radiation

    Radiation

Because of her age, and the possible long term effects of proposed chemotherapy, we wanted to do some fertility treatment and harvesting of eggs. In order to do that, her doctors felt the growth of the tumor had to be slowed, so she didn't go into respiratory distress. She had 5 radiation treatments, prior to undergoing one cycle of fertility treatment.

    Fertility/ Egg harvesting

    Other Care

At 22, with the possibility of sterility from chemotherapy, we decided to have eggs harvested. My daughter went through one cycle of daily fertility injections to stimulate her ovaries and produce eggs. When the time came, the fertility specialist was able to harvest 22 viable eggs. A success!

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

The day after the egg harvesting, chemotherapy started. She had to have 6 rounds, divided into 2 treatments each. She had to be in the chair for 6-7 hours with an IV. Her oncologist decided against a port, as the risk of infection was too high with her immune system compromised by the chemo and the type of cancer. The first couple of treatment produced some mild side effects, but the effects and anxiety grew as the treatment continued. At one point, just over half way through, my daughter decided in her mind that she wasn't going to do any more. After being convinced that she had to continue, the only way it happened was after taking some really strong anti-anxiety medication. She completed all 12 treatments, with many shots and blood tests in between.

    Depression/Anxiety

    Side Effects

Depression, anxiety, low white blood count, constipation, metal taste in mouth, nausea, etc... Some days worse than others, many of these manageable with oral and injectable medication. A tough road for someone 23 years old!

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

She finished treatment on October 10th, 2007. We planned a surprise party in her honor that Wednesday night. 50 people showed up on our doorstep, rang the doorbell and came in with food, drinks, balloons & gifts! A strong support group is so important when going through this journey...
