    Oh No

I found a lump in my right breast. I was so scared! I was in my doctors office that afternoon. The following week I had a diagnostic MRI and ultrasound. After two negative biopsies we proceded to surgery.

    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a lumpectomy and develped a huge hematoma which delayed healing and was very uncomfortable. Also reacted poorly to pain medications. The surgery was very difficult for me emotionally. I could not look at myself in the mirror for over a week. Because of the massive hematoma, I had to wear my bra in the shower for two weeks because of pain.

    Problem with doctor

    Oh No

After two negative biopsies I was less nervous going into surgery. Two days after surgery my surgeon called me at home to tell me there was cancer. Papillary carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ. He said that no further treatment was necessary. He said " I got it all, if it comes back it will be something different." He did not refer me to a medical oncologist or do any hormone testing on the tumor. It was a horrible experience!

    Other Care

I sought a second opinion at a center that specializes in cancer treatment. They were great! They got samples of my tumor and did testing. They said that it was a moderately aggressive tumor and that I needed radiation treatment. They also found it was hormone sensitive and started me on Tamoxifen which I will take for 5 years. They helped me with lifestyle and dietary changes to help in both recovery and prevention.

    Hormone therapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

My radiation treatment is completed. I am back on hormone therapy and hopefully will tolerate it this time. The main side effects I have now are hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings. We are working to minimize side effect which means I am taking a lot of pills every day.

    External radiation

    Radiation

Had 6 weeks of radiation therapy. I was on Tamoxifen when I started radiation. As soon as I started radiation my legs started aching. The pain in my legs continued to get worse and I was taken off Tamoxifen. The leg pain slowy resolved. The other effects of radiation were burning of the skin and significant fatigue the last 3 weeks of treatment.

    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree
