    Radiation and chemotherapy together

I received external radiation therapy five days a week for six weeks, while receiving low dose chemotherapy one a week over the same time period. Radiation was painless and easy. Side effects of fatigue and diarrhea.

    Internal radiation (Brachytherapy)

    Radiation

I had five brachytherapy radiation treatments spaced over three weeks. . I was sedated for each treatment and did not feel anything. My doctors and nurses were amazing. Again main side effect was fatigue.

    Fatigue (tiredness)

    Side Effects

Fatigue was the worst side effect I experienced. Diarrhea also, which was mostly controlled with anti-diarrhea meds.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

Finished treatment in June. Followup testing showed some cancer cells, but they were dying. In October I had three month followup. Testing came back no cancer cells! PET scan also came back clear. :)

    Cancer is back/Recurred

    Oh No

Followup pap in January showed "suspicious glandular cells of unknown significance". Doctor said we need to find out if this is from radiation effects or cancer.

    Conization

    Procedure or Surgery

Cone biopsy was the plan, but doctor was unable to perform the procedure due to radiation effects. Instead he took multiple biopsies.

    Oh No

Not really sure if cancer is back. Biopsies came back "residual adenocarcinoma". Still possible these cells are dying...or they could be lingering active cells.

    Abdominal hysterectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Even though my recent PET scan was clear the suspicious cells still need to be addressed. My doctor said "the next step is a hysterectomy and we are going to do that next week". Two weeks post-op tomorrow and I seem to be recovering as expected. Hoping this took care of the problem for good!
