Breast Reconstruction (Implant)
Procedure or Surgery
I began reconstruction immediately after double Mastectomy in late October. I began radiation in November and completed that in January. I had implant exchange and nipple reconstruction using a skin graft from my lower abdomen last week. I am happy with the surgery and recovery so far.
External radiation
Radiation
Finished radiation in January. I found myself feeling depressed and frustrated with going everyday to the oncology center for the procedure. I did feel less energetic during that time also. My radiated skin looks almost normal again.
Double Mastectomy
Procedure or Surgery
Much more pain than anticipated. I also had 8 lymph nodes removed which contributed to the pain and lack of mobility. Drain sites on the affected (left) side were painful. Went to occupational therapy for 6 weeks to help with tightness and mobility problems.
Chemotherapy
Drug or Chemo Therapy
I had 16 chemo sessions. The first aggressive rounds with the Red Devil kicked my butt. I was so nauseated for days after. Food did not taste the same. I felt like I did during the hardest parts of pregnancy or worse until chemo was done. Losing my hair, my energy and the dry mouth/metallic taste were the worst side effects. I hope I never have to go through that again.
Procedure or Surgery
I had my first pet scan last week. The day before reconstruction surgery. I find out the results this week. I am not dwelling on it. It's out of my hands. If the cancer returned, then I would have a hard decisions to make. I don't know if I could ever do chemo again.
