    Diagnosed

    Oh No

Had a routine mammo after skipping them for 8 years. Had ultrasound guided needle biopsy all in the same day. Found out a few days later that I had Stage 3 breast cancer.

    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

I had 17 lymph nodes removed with 8 positive. The drain was unexpected and more painful in my armpit than the breast surgery. I had to have a re-excision to get a cleaner margin a few weeks later.

    External radiation

    Radiation

I wasn't prepared to be so tired from radiation. I got a nasty burn on my collar bone only because I didn't apply the cream to that area. No one told me that it went so high up.

    Side Effects

I got several side effects but don't know how to list more than one. I had a lot of stomach related issues, fatigue and weight gain.

    hair, eyebrows and eyelashes

    Loss

I think losing my lashes were a shock. I could wear head coverings and draw brows but nothing can prepare you for how you look without lashes.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

I brought a cake to my last chemo session that said, "Cancer Cannot Conquer the Spirit". I invited my family and brought lots of food for all the other patients and nurses. We ate, laughed and also cried when I rang the bell. I was happy but also very sad to be leaving a place that was saving my life.
