    Diagnosed

    Oh No

It was almost Christmas of 2010 and the doctor told me what I had hoped I would never hear: "It's Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Stage 111b. If you don't agree to Chemo you have only a year maybe 18 months at best." Cancer really wasn't found in my family tree and I was so sure that was one thing I would NEVER have to face in my own life. But here I was; diagnosed with stage 3b cancer and it didn't matter that cancer had alluded my ancestors---it still managed its loathsome way into my life and now I had to deal with it.

Would I fight and choose to have chemo or just wait to die?

    Decision Point

ACTUALLY, I WAS READY TO GO HOME TO BE WITH MY LORD AND SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST; ALTHOUGH I MUST ADMIT I HADN'T EXPECTED IT WOULD BE SO SOON. HOWEVER, MY 5 ADULT CHILDREN AND 10 GRANDCHILDREN WEREN'T WILLING TO ACCEPT MY EARLY DEPARTURE AND PLEADED WITH ME TO AGREE TO SUBMIT TO THE SERIES OF 6 CHEMO TREATMENTS PRESCRIBED BY MY ONCOLOGIST TO BE ADMINISTERED ONCE EVERY THREE WEEKS OVER A FIVE MONTH PERIOD.

Anemia (low red blood cell counts)

    Side Effects

I WAS TOLD I WOULD DEFINITELY LOSE MY HAIR ON THE 8TH DAY AFTER MY FIRST TREATMENT. SO WHEN THE 8TH DAY CAME AND WENT I WAS REASONABLY CONFIDENT THAT THEY WERE WRONG AND MY HAIR WOULD BE SPARED. AND IT WAS---UNTIL DAY TEN WHEN IT FELL OUT BY THE HANDFULS. I WAS SO DISTRAUGHT. NOW, MIND YOU, I AM NOT ONE TO BE VERY CONCERNED WITH MY OUTWARD APPEARANCE AND PHYSICAL BEAUTY BUT THIS WAS DIFFERENT. ADRIAMYACIN HAD CAUSED ALL MY HAIR ALL OVER TO JUST DROP FROM MY BODY. IT WASN'T BAD ENOUGH THAT I WAS STARTING TO FEEL VERY FATIGUED AND NAUSEATED MOST OF THE TIME BUT NOW I HAD TO RELY ON SCARVES AND WIGS TO KEEP ME FROM FEELING LIKE A COMPLETE FREAK OF NATURE. I HAD AN UNCLE WHO WAS A PRISONER OF WAR DURING WW 11 AND AFTER THE WAR HE LOST ALL OF HIS BODILY HAIR (ALOPECIA IS WHAT THE DOCTORS CALLED IT). I THINK IT MUST HAVE BEEN RELATED TO HIS BEING NEARLY STARVED TO DEATH WHILE IN THAT POW CAMP BUT AT LEAST HE HAD A GOOD REASON FOR LOSING HIS HAIR---MAYBE IT COULD EVEN BE CONSTRUED AS A BADGE OF COURAGE! BUT NOTHING SO NOBLE FOR ME; INSTEAD, MY REASON WAS CANCER AND THERE WAS NOTHING NOBLE IN THAT! THEN AS THE WEEKS PASSED, I SEEMED TO BE MORE AND MORE TIRED AND WEAK. I WOULD BE SO SICK JUST FOLLOWING A TREATMENT I ALMOST ALWAYS HAD TO BE ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL OR AT LEAST BE GIVEN 2 UNITS OF BLOOD ON AN OUTPATIENT BASIS SO I COULD SURVIVE UNTIL THE NEXT TREATMENT. I WOULD FEEL SO WEAK AND IN DESPAIR AND DREAD OF THE UPCOMING TREATMENT.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

fINALLY, THE DAY i HAD BEEN SO ANXIOUSLY WAITING FOR HAD ARRIVED---APRIL 12, 2011---MY LAST TREATMENT OF THE SERIES OF 6 AND PRAYERFULLY MY LAST EVER! THEN IN MAY I HAD MY FOLLOW-UP PET SCAN AND I COULD HARDLY WAIT TO HEAR MY ONCOLOGIST SAY THERE WAS NO SIGN OF ANY OF THE 6 TUMORS THAT ORIGINALLY PRESENTED THEMSELVES AS INVADERS INSIDE ME. WITHIN A FEW DAYS THE REPORT WAS IN AND I MET WITH MY ONCOLOGIST (WHO BY THE WAY, WAS WONDERFUL AND VERY DILIGENT IN CARING FOR ME). I KNEW IN MY HEART THAT THE CANCEROUS TUMORS WERE GONE AND I WAS CANCER-FREE. AND THANKFULLY THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HE HAD TO TELL ME. PRAISE THE LORD!!!
