a fall i experienced at work led me to a ct scan to see if i had a pelvic crack that was missed on x-ray, and a mass/tumor was found on my ovaries,

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

i went in for what was suspected ovarian cancer, with a hysterectomy to be done, and came out with cancer of the appendix. the appendix had a tumor that had opened up and spread, especially to my ovaries. it formed a tumor on one of my ovaries. so they removed my appendix, ovaries/tumor and cleaned out what cancer mucin that had spread.

    Home care

    Other Care

my body was very depleted when i arrived for surgery, so i went home, after a 10 day stay, with a TPN regimine that i do on a daily basis. they draw blood once a week to see what needs to be added/removed from the TPN. i have been home 3 weeks, and will continue on for a while longer, someone in the hospital called it "my steak and potatoes" !!!

now i await to see if i will still be a candidate for the HIPEC procedure.

    Decision Point

this is a newer much more effective way to treat cancer of the appendix, it is an intensive surgery and i need to get much stronger and gain some weight before i could have the surgery, as i had lost weight earlier from side effects of the cancer itself, bloating, etc. with the TPN and my appetite coming back, i have already gained 8 lbs. in 3 weeks!!! i await my appointment with the surgeon now.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

well, i found out from the surgeon on thursday, that if i can go off the TPN and maintain my nutrition and weight, and continue to get stronger, (walk, walk, and more walk as he put it) he wants to do the HIPEC in 3 months which includes a chemo treatment during surgery,,, he will remove my uterus, since it wasn't done with the last surgery,,, he was very thorough and helped explain things i questioned, and every time he had a positive, he would come with the other side of the coin, and vice versa,,, which i did like because i needed to know somewhat where i stood in all of this cancer,,, with appendix cancer being rare, they just do not have a lot of data to go off of,,, but i felt good leaving his office that day!!! one step, one day at a time!!!

    Side Effects

at first i thought the hot flashes was the pain meds,,, then i thought it was just how nutritionally unhealthy i was,,, my moods were all over the place,,, THEN i was told it was "menopause", makes sense now, but i sure thought i was just going nuts!!!

    HIPEC

    Procedure or Surgery

well i had my surgery, march 13, again did not go as expected,,, when they opened me up, they cleaned away the mucin (the ick) and was left with unexpected tumors that were inoperable,,, i got out on the 22, and healing fine, since no body parts were taken out or no bowel resection done,,,

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

so now the question, systemic chemo was of no value before, that is why they plannned on doing the HIPEC, which they did decide to do anyway during the surgery, since it was planned and it couldn't hurt the outcome,,, now, do i do the chemo, in hopes of keeping the tumors from growing, even though they will always be too high risk to try and go back in to remove any of them later,,, saw an oncologist last tues, he stressed weighing the quality of life to the quanity, with no quarentees it will lengthen it, alot of side affects, some permanent, and it would be an ongoing chemo, not a 6 mo or 12 mo regimend and stop,,, what to do, i pray for God's guidance in all of this, i pray i will "listen" to what He is trying to tell me,,,

well i went for checkup with the surgeon who did my last surgery, HIPEC, and also met with an oncologist from down there. after 3 hours of lots of questions, supportive answers(which is still so much unknow answers), i have decided to give the systemic chemo a try!!! i feel really good about getting a second opinion, would recommend that to everyone!!! the local oncologist said i needed to have 2 months post surgery, so in about 4 weeks i will get started!!! labs and ct again, and of course put in the port, so time will go fast!!! i knew God would open my eyes to what i needed to do, i feel this is definately what i need to do, i used to think being "unique" was what i wanted, now i don't think being "unique" is all that great, but i look at it this way, i am making "history" with the "unique" progression of my cancer, so i am hoping this all will benefit someone else one day on their cancer journey!!!

    do i continue with chemo???

    Decision Point

the results of my ct scan showed that the mucin (my jelly belly) is coming back,,, hard to tell if cancer has spread,,, will see my last surgeon soon, so i will be anxious to hear his opinion of the scans,,, so for now, i decided to continue with chemo for 2 more months, then he wants to do scans again,,, i guess i got to do what i feel is best for me, and right now chemotheraphy is the option i am going for+++

well, after almost a year of no real change in the ct scans, this last one showed change, and my CEA went up 15 points, as it was sitting at about low to mid 40's. so after much thought, I am starting chemo again, after about 5 months off, (side effects were too much for my body at that time) on the 29 of july. like everything in life, I will try my best to take it one day at a time!!!
