    Diagnosed

    Oh No

My dad was diagnosed Wednesday 11/21/12, pathology came back to verify 11/26/12 Esophogeal cancer spread to lymph nodes surgery not an option. was told treatable but not curable. Had a stint put in yesterday, Monday 11/26/12 to help him eat, not doing very well from that surgery. Once he goes home, has appointments already set up with oncologists that treated my mom for breast cancer (double mastectomy), and have other oncologists that work with esophogeal cancer as well in the office. Will get more information on course of treatment at that time. my hope is that chemo/radiation (mentioned already) will help with the spreading to the lymph nodes, and make the mass smaller so surgery is an option.... and work on the lymph nodes with chemo / radiation, or whatever else the oncologist suggests. Open to anything that might work!! My mom and dad will be getting on this site, well, my mom... maybe my dad but he isn't into the computer too much. My dad is also severly diabetic and is an amputee. The diabetes along with the esophogeal cancer I think is going to make nutrition and eating more important than ever!! Blood Sugar levels!!

    Other

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

had appt with oncologist.... scheduling catscan and petscan, and as of now, radiation 5x a week, chemo once. won't start until after the catscan and petscan.... may change once they find out if it only spread to lymph nodes or beyond that. Also will tattoo him so they know where to concentrate on with the radiation.

    Procedure or Surgery

my dad went yesterday for his catscan, was to have petscan this morning. after catscan he got short of breath, started having major pain and his blood sugar shot up to almost 900. They took him to hospital, he was incoherent...... admitted him into cardiac care unit. said no heart attack...thought it was due to the esophogeal cancer, not enough fluids or nutrition ...making diabetes uncontrollable...... kidneys and liver enzymes maybe caused problem with heart, had arythmia (?SP), they were running tests to find out exactly what is going on. well, woke up this morning.....MY dad did have a heart attack yesterday. he is being transferred to another hospital, to e put in the cardiac ICU again. His Oncologist told my mom that they cannot treat or do anything for the cancer until they get his blood sugar under control..... on a regular basis, and find out why the heart attack and "fix" that problem...basically get him healthy before they can do any radiation or chemo. He couldn't even have his petscan this morning........ the next day they confirmed it was a heart attack. cannot treat cancer until blood sugar stable, and it is not, and can't have bypass in his heart, which they should have found with angioplasty's this summer, but didn't until the heart attack..... until the cancer is cleared up. not a good situation. i wish i could take the cancer for him...... i don't want it, but i don't want my dad to have it!!!!

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

12 19 12 Things have been crazy. Dad had his petscan yesterday..got to go home last night..still needs 24/7 care...but can get at home. 911 called this morning..his blood sugar dropped to 35. Then petscan results...told my mom..we knew it spread from esophagus to lymph nodes...told my mom also spread to the throat and chest..and she couldn't say anything else..had to come from oncologist. That can't be good. Oncologist says wants to start treatment immediately..and will talk wed and get schedule for chemo n radiation. Mom decided to not tell him it spread til see Dr wed...probably same reason Dr made appt for day after xmas...let him enjoy xmas as best he can....not losing hope cuz petscan results or feeling worse from starting treatments. My mom is also gonna talk to oncologist about proton ...(tharr be more)therapy..... Only good thing I am trying to focus on...Dr said he wants to start chemo and radiation immediately.....that's gotta mean something.....wants to treat it...fight it..hopefully he thinks we have a chance. Once cancer cleared up..bypass surgery in heart!.. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. Took my mom, me, and a walker to get him from his recliner to bed..he is so weak and unsteady.....and in front of m dad...being tough...gotta be with his personality..or he will think..if she is that worried.....and his mind will go negative from there. Trying to be strong for my mom and son..but hard. Anytime not in front of them...waterworks. Trey is so sweet..knows I am sad..keeps hugging and kissing me..tells me how much he loves me. When he us old enough to understand d I will h as be to make sure he knows how much he has helped...my little saving grace! He seems to know just when I need it..and how bad! He knows Pops is very very sick....but kept very general ..he is only 3 but already such a difference in my dad...had to tell him something..appropriate for his age..not scare him..help him understand....sorry for babbling on. This is going to be one very bittersweet Christmas!! :'(

my dad passed away feb 18 2013. I held his hand as he passed away. his funeral was on the 3 month anniversary of the diagnosis. he fought it with all he had, his will never gave up, his body just couldn't take the treatment, complication after complication. Rest in peace, my dad, my hero.
