    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I was able to work while undergoing treatment, taking a few days off after each treatment to go through the side effects and recover. I had lots of support and encouragement from co-workers, family and friends. Their support helped me enormously! A challenge was that I live in a small, remote town and it was a 2-3 hour drive to the treatment center.

    Work problems

    Oh No

I had an abusive boss who seemed to dislike me and wanted to get rid of me. I was cut to half time and had to pay on our own to continue my work's health insurance. We had to supplement our income with savings. It was a very rough--going through a diagnosis & treatment for recurrent breast cancer while also experiencing abusive treatment at work and related financial difficulties.

    Loss

I was cut to half-time and forced to retire in a year. I was devastated. My professional identity and commitment has always been a big part of me.

I had some medicine that I could take when I needed it to help me control anxiety and to help me sleep at night.

should I have breast reconstruction? double mastectomy?

    Decision Point

It was really helpful to see a therapist who helped me recognize how my thinking was effected by my fears. It was helpful to put fears aside and look at the choices more clearly. I am so thankful!

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I was able to work while undergoing chemo. I did experience fatigue which I managed by pacing myself, eating well, and going for walks every day. My chemo was cut short because I was getting significant neuropathy in my hands and feet. I lost my hair, it came back curly! A challenge was that I live in a small town in a remote, rural area--I had to travel 4-5 hours to get my treatment at City of Hope. It was expensive and travel didn't make things easy, but it was worth it for the excellent care I received at COH.

Radiation went smoothly, however it triggered lymphedema. Lymphedema has had a big impact on my life.

Hot flashes managed with gabapentin. The gabapentin also helps the neuropathy I acquired from chemo.
