    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I thought I would be diagnosed with DCIS and that I'd only get a lumpectomy. When I was told I had to get a mastectomy I was floored, what happened to breast conserving surgery? Part 2 was when the breast tissue showed a few invasive tumors, of which the biggest was 1.2 cm, placing me in stage IIb and needing chemo.

    Double Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

I was "healthy" and active before the surgery. I believed this helped me go through the double mastectomy, chemo, and reconstruction with relative ease. I was discharged after only one night at the hospital, I was glad to get out. I think in part what helped was the disbelief that it was happening to me, the denial was high. To this day I have a hard time wrapping my he'd around being a cancer patient.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Had 4 cycles of AC and 4 cycles of Taxotere Herceptin, dose dense (so every 2 weeks). This was followed by Herceptin every 3 weeks to complete a year. Hair loss happened 2 weeks after my first chemo. Eyelash and eyebrows fell off at the end of the 8 cycles. I had a lot of nausea during my first cycle, despite taking Emend, I lost 5 lbs the first week of chemo. After that I was given more antiemetics, and was fine. By the end of the 4 cycles of AC I was exhausted, I could sleep 48 hours straight. The Taxotere wasn't so bad in terms of being tired, I got more energy as the treatment went on. However, I experienced a lot of pain (bone and muscles) from it, like a severe bout of flu.

Medicine for low white blood cell count

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I took Neupogen for 7 days after chemo. I injected in my stomach area. At first it was ok, but the area became sore after a while, and I started to dread the injections (I'm ok with needles, and had no issues with self injection). I didn't develop mouth sores or got any infections/fever during chemo, so this supportive care treatment worked well for me.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

End of summer 2011, no more chemo. For the first time in my life I couldn't wait for summer to be over. Of course it took a while for normal, but at the time I was ecstatic.
