what type of surgery to have & where to have it done

    Decision Point

I did not like the first surgeon I saw. He was rude & inconsiderate. My aunt who had breast cancer & went through this almost 6 years ago talked me into getting a second opinion and doing so at a teaching hospital. I live in Iowa, so the best one around is the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. There they took the time to explain everything and my options (1st surgeon just told me what I had & was ready to book the surgery & told me I was going to have a double mastectomy). After reading & researching as much as I could, and talking with others about the experience, I decided to do the double mastectomy myself. I just knew I had to make that decision & be ok with it, or I would have questioned myself the rest of my life if I had done the right thing. It was the right decision for me. I have so far experienced some great doctors at U of I.

    triple negative cancer

    Clinical Trial

Did the same drug treatments, but in the trial I have an extra week before getting another treatment. Same number of treatments too. A little extra time for recovery has been good for me. Especially since the drugs are building their side effects to become greater with each treatment.

    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

I had an issue after my port was placed. One end of the stitches wasn't healing right. Because it wasn't stitched completely to the end & a stitch was sticking out. I removed the piece myself, but like I said, it wasn't stitched completely to the end, so it has a hole appearance on one end, and still is not healed yet. I am soon getting my last treatment. Will have my plastic surgeon take a look. Did not get my port at the U of I hospital like I had wanted to.

    Chemo brain

    Side Effects

I cannot function fully in my memory & thinking processes. I forget a lot of things, yet my mind goes a million miles a minute. At this point, someone else should be in charge of making sure I do everything I'm suppose to

    Depression/Anxiety

    Side Effects

I feel very isolated. I don't want to go anywhere for fear of catching the flu or a cold right now that could put me into the hospital & cause me to miss work, which I am still missing due to treatments & not feeling well. I am sad that I have no one to lean on and talk to that I feel I can relate & someone to really show that they care. Many people say they want to help, but no one can help when I need them to....ugh! I feel so alone it's very upsetting to me.

    Fatigue (tiredness)

    Side Effects

I am tired right down to my bones! I get a little energy when I wake up, but that quickly dies down after I do a few things, then I'm ready for a nap.

    Fluid in the abdomen (ascites)

    Side Effects

I think I have this & no one has asked me if I have (drs.). My stomach seems to stick out & feel bloated at times. Haven't really gained/lost any weight. It will go up about 5-6 lbs. when I start to feel better & can taste food again, but that is how much it goes down at the start of a treatment because I don't want to eat. Nothing even sounds good to eat or even tastes good.

    Hair loss (alopecia)

    Side Effects

Started losing my hair 2 weeks after my 1st treatment. It actually hurt my head as it was falling out, so about 4-5 days after it started, I had it shaved off, which made my head stop hurting.

    Hot flashes

    Side Effects

This happens the first few days after treatment. It seems to be lasting a little longer with each one. Most of it happens when I am trying to sleep. Wake up sweaty with nothing or just the sheet on. Temp in my house overnight is 64.

    Mood changes

    Side Effects

The more treatments I have, the more I am not liking to be around people who have no compassion for what I am going through. I am sick, please be nice to me! Frustration with not having anyone really to lean on & talk to is making me depressed and angry.

My fingertips and toes are a tingly numbness. They hurt when the nails are slightly long and are bumped on anything. Hot water hurts my fingers also.

I am feeling a lot better now...now that chemo is over! I still have my last reconstruction surgery to go. Getting my energy back is a good feeling. :)
