Quarterly CT Scan - hilary

Celebration Associated with Pancreatic Cancer. Posted on August 3, 2012 View this journey (17 Experiences)

Dad's 2nd set of scans came back CLEAR!! May was also clear, but we had a shadow of a rising CA19-9. The CA19-9 is still rising, but this time ONCOLOGY & RADIATION ONCOLOGY Drs agreed to disregard the CA19-9 at this time. There is nothing showing in the scans to correlate the rising tumor marker.

Radiation Oncologist did share a theory... the biliary stent Dad had placed last summer (pre-diagnosis) has moved ... the Dr believes this is causing irritation/inflammation which would cause the liver enzymes to increase (which we see) which will, in turn, increase the CA19.9. This jives with what hte oncologist said about wanting to remove the floating stent asap because of hte risk of irritation/infection/inflammation.

Dad will have endoscopic procedure on 8/13 to remove the stent floating around his GI track... Hopefully this will get his CA19-9 back on track.

We celebrated tonight by going out to dinner... This was a FIRST for Dad in forever. (Post Whipple, he's been soooo leary of eating out) Of course, we forgot his Creon!! My dear husband ran home to get it and bring it back. We definitely wanted tonight to be a POSITIVE CELEBRATION and the BEGINNING of MANY MORE!

Oh, and Dad is up to 150 lbs!!! He's gained 5 lbs in 3 months... mostly attributed to the Creon he's been taking the past 3-4 weeks. Surgeon didn't think he'd need to take it, but it's helping him put on weight - so it's a good thing!!!!

I feel as though a dark cloud has just been lifted... I feel like an excited electron bouncing off everything ... i feel HAPPY. So Happy, I think I will cry. ;)

Hilary, I was told that my stent would be removed when I had Whipple. Was there a reason your dad's surgeon didn't remove the stent when he had Whipple surgery? I'm curious about options.

onoi11 - actually, the surgeon DID remove the stent in Dad's bile duct during the whipple. The stent that was floating around causing irritation was evidently used DURING THE WHIPPLE to help the pancreas attach to the bowels... like a stabilizer/to give the "meat" more weight for the stitching.

My husband had Whipple in October 2013. After that, his CA 19 dropped to 32. However in June 2014, the CA 19 went back to 400. He started the chemo due to that. The strange thing is that the CA 19 keeps rising by 500 every time after he had chemo. My husband is having good appetite and has gained back 15 lbs after Whipple. He is now working full time. Except for the hair loss due to the chemo, my husband is fine. He has no pain. He can eat and sleep well. We are confused about the rising CA19. I hope someone in the group can explain what can cause CA19 to increase. My husband will finish the chemo therapy by the end of Feb. We are looking forward to that day to come but also worry that the doctor might want him to do more due to the rising CA 19.

Good for y'all to start chemo proactively! We waited too for Dad and could never get ahead of the beast.

Mayo does not check ca19-9 during chemo because the results are erratic... Don't let the numbers disturb you. Stay the course. Prayers for the best.

Dad passed 14 months ago... But he fought it like it was nobody's business.

I pray your husband is the cure!

    Hi Hilary,
Thanks for your quick response and encouragement !

The CA19 did bother my husband and me. Our doctor never explained the possible reasons to cause the rising ca19 so we have been very confused. My husband will have a CT Scan after chemos. I hope the result is good.
