Experiences with Job Loss

What happens next with employment is not the first thing that cancer patients consider when they receive their diagnosis. However, problems with your job or even job loss (and health and life insurance issues), affect your life dramatically when you or a family member has cancer. It is illegal to get fired when you have cancer but there are still chances that you may lose your job for other reasons. There is also the risk that you may have to quit your job during cancer treatment. Check the American Cancer Society’s detailed guide on managing financial and legal matters while facing cancer including information on the Americans with Disabilities Act.

There are emotional and financial burdens that come with losing your job. A lot of WhatNexter’s are not aware of their options when this happens. Some wonder if you can be fired when your boss finds out that you have cancer. Others ask, ‘What happens when you lose your job due to loss of company contract?’ or ‘How does COBRA come into play after I lose my job?’ or just, ‘How do I face the fear of losing my job?’. If you feel that you have lost your job because you have cancer, then you need to contact a lawyer immediately. For more information on options that you may have after losing your job, research the American Cancer Society’s website or search for firsthand insights below.
