The wrost part was the ileostomy. I eas depresses for a month. It is reversable, but I cannot stop having chemo to have the surgery. At first, my life changed a lot. I just couldn't deal with it. Now, two years later and I still don't like it but we have a truce now.

With my first bout of cancer 25 years ago I ended up with a colostomy. Since I was only 27 years old I initially struggled with the idea of having an ostomy. But for me it was not reversible so I learned to adapt. It eventually became second nature. A few years ago I had a second bout of colon cancer. This time they had to remove my entire colon so I ended up with an ileostomy, My initial mindset was I can deal with this since I've lived with a colostomy for 18 years. Unfortunately the doctors didn't clearly explain the differences (and challenges) with an ileostomy vs a colostomy. An ileostomy requires a lot more effort and challenges than a colostomy. It took me awhile but I've come to better deal with the ileostomy. Don't get me wrong. Many mornings I get frustrated that I have to change my appliance. But the biggest challenge has been with my eating. It's been a journey but I'm trying to make the most of it. Things could be worse and i have my life. Best wishes to you.

I have had my ileostomy for almost two years. It is awful at first. It has been trail and error. It took me a year to find the right appliance. I delt with so many leaks and embarrassing moments before I found the right appliance and barrier. It is much easier now. Mine is reversible but I cannot stay off chemo long enough to do it. One day at a time.
