Experiences with Being Misdiagnosed

Cancer Misdiagnosis

Being misdiagnosed can cause a lot of anger and “Why me?” questions for cancer patients. It is already difficult to hear that you have cancer; if a cancer misdiagnosis leads to delayed treatment plans, that misdiagnosis can put you in danger and leave you with a lot of “What if?” scenarios. Maybe your primary care doctor missed the signs, maybe you failed to get a second opinion, or maybe you overlooked routine tests you could have had done due to a family history of cancer. Whatever the reason for the cancer misdiagnosis, you cannot blame yourself. It is important to focus on today and what can be done now that you know about your cancer.

A lot of WhatNexter’s who have dealt with a cancer misdiagnosis have experienced anger, however they all agree that the only thing to do is focus on the present. Other than that, there is little you can do when dealing with a cancer misdiagnosis. Advice WhatNexter’s have gleaned from their misdiagnosis include seeking a cautious doctor, keeping family history in mind, getting a second opinion, and following your gut instinct. Anger is a big result of misdiagnosis. Albeit hard, it is important to deal with the anger you have. Share how you have overcome obstacles in your journey, ask, and answer questions below.
