Experiences with Work problems

One of the biggest questions cancer patients ask when they start to undergo cancer treatment is, “Will I be able to work during cancer treatment?”. Some other questions you may have include, “Will I get disability payments?” or “How do I tell my manager I have cancer?” or “Can I get fired because I have cancer?”. On top of going through chemotherapy, recovering from surgery, or coping with the general fatigue of cancer, you have to find your own personal answers to these questions. There are no guidelines to what you can or cannot do while you have cancer, however there are some federal and state laws that say your employer must work with you. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) states that eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of health insurance.

There is no way to predict how your work life will be affected by having cancer. The most important thing is to be realistic and identify your needs, expectations, and limitations. Whether or not you can continue to work while you have cancer will depend on you, what kind of work you do, possibly how chemotherapy or radiation therapy affect your body, and the flexibility of your schedule. If you have a desire to continue work, you can be smart about scheduling treatments, consider working part-time, or work from home. You may be experiencing trouble finding work after cancer treatment; when in an interview, showcase your skills, not your cancer. Most employers will work with you.
