Experiences with Hospice

Hospice is a design of care set up to give comfort and support to patients who will no longer receive medical treatment due to incurable disease. Hospice provides compassion to these patients and their families during the last phase of the patient’s life. Hospice is most commonly available to patients who are expected to live about 6 months or less. Often times the decision to put a patient under Hospice care is just as important to the family as it is to the patient. Hospice relieves family members and loved ones from being the sole caregivers by offering kind and caring professionals to assist with care. Hospice is palliative care that aims to increase the quality of life without hastening or postponing death. Hospice can take place in the home, a hospital, nursing home, or private hospice facility.

It is common for families to have reservations about accepting Hospice care because they associate it with giving up or losing hope, but if the patient gets better they can come out of Hospice and go back into cancer treatment. The initial fear of Hospice is overcome by the daily hope that it gives patients for a better quality of life. Many family members on WhatNext struggle with the decision of putting their loved patient in Hospice or the emotions they will face in doing so. If you are struggling with this same decision, it is helpful to read positive stories and testimonials of those that have accepted Hospice into their lives.
