Experiences with Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is a surgery that removes the uterus due to ovarian cancer or cervical cancer. A hysterectomy surgery could also include the removal of the cervix (total hysterectomy), ovaries (oophrectomy), and/or the fallopian tubes. The three types are abdominal hysterectomy, vaginal hysterectomy, and laparoscopic hysterectomy. A hysterectomy detects how far the cancer has spread. Some women with the BRCA gene choose to have a hysterectomy as a cautionary measure. Chemotherapy may be started 1-4 weeks after a hysterectomy, and a woman cannot get pregnant after the surgery. All woman are sexually affected by a hysterectomy in different ways and may experience early menopause.

One of the best coping methods when considering a hysterectomy is to learn from women who have had surgery for ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, and breast cancer. WhatNexter’s have asked, “What are some hysterectomy recovery experiences?”, “Has anyone had the DaVinci Robot Hysterectomy surgery?”, and “What are the emotions associated with female surgeries?”. Many women agree that you should consider doctor’s suggestions, what you are comfortable with, and to wait until your body is strong enough for the surgery if you are able. If you have had previous surgeries, make sure you are ready to take on another surgery.
