Experiences with Lobectomy

A lobectomy is a surgery where a section (lobe) of the lung is removed. A surgical cut is made between the ribs in the side of the chest (thoracotomy) to perform the lung lobectomy. A lobectomy is a common treatment for non-small cell lung cancer when the cancer is localized in one lung and the cancer can be removed. The right lung has three lobes and the left lung has 2 lobes. A right lobectomy or left lobectomy may be done. A lung scan is done before the lung lobectomy to predict the outcome of the surgery and how much function you will have in the lungs. Other lung cancer surgeries are a segmentectomy (wedge resection) and a pneumonectomy (entire lung removed). About 90% of lung cancers are a result of tobacco use and cigarette smoking. Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the United States.

It is hard to pinpoint expectations after a lung lobectomy because no one has specific answers. Everyone has different capabilities after a lobectomy; a lot of WhatNexter’s suggest that you should talk to your doctor and keep a positive attitude post surgery. It is helpful to seek answers from WhatNexter’s who have had lobectomy surgery or helped loved ones with lung cancer. Some have shared their experiences having a lobectomy, and some have asked questions like, “How do I return to a normal routine after a lobectomy?” or “What are the risks of a lobectomy?”. If you need support from other lung cancer patients, ask question and read firsthand insights below.
