Experiences with Experiences with Taste Change/Loss

Taste change, loss of taste, or metallic taste in the mouth is a common side effect of chemotherapy; this side effect can make it hard to find things you enjoy eating and therefore cause loss of appetite and weight changes. WhatNexters say eating foods with a stronger taste like really sour, really sweet, really salty, or even very spicy has helped them cope with the change in taste. Some WhatNexters experimented with different foods and found that they were not able to eat foods that were "familiar" to them.

Some other suggestions provided by WhatNexters include sucking on sour candy to cover the bad taste, avoiding eating one to two hours before and up to three hours after chemotherapy to prevent food aversions caused by nausea and vomiting, avoiding favorite foods while going through chemo to prevent aversions to those foods in the future, eating foods that smell good since sense of smell is often heightened.

Below are some experiences shared by WhatNexters in their journey through cancer. Ask questions, share experiences, and get firsthand insights here.

Perhaps the dry mouth contributes to my decreased ability to enjoy taste, but everything has begun to taste like cabbage.
