Milestones Associated with Invasive (Infiltrating) Ductal Carcinoma . Posted on June 17, 2017 View this journey (18 Experiences)

It's been almost 5 years since my second diagnosis of breast cancer and today I had "nipples" made to my DIEP flap reconstructed "breasts". This is the second-to-last step in a very long process of getting well and going through reconstruction. The only thing left is the tattooing which will happen in about 6 months. Today I am feeling emotional---remembering all that I've gone through--first diagnosis of DCIS, lumpectomy, radiation, tamoxifen for 5 years, 9 years clean, then second breast cancer of infiltrating ductal, mastectomy, chemo, 5 blood transfusions, reconstruction by DIEP flap, infected breasts, modifications and then today. People who haven't been through this have NO IDEA how much emotion has been connected to each of these steps. I am just feeling so thankful today that my amazingly strong husband was at my side the entire time, putting up with all my ups and downs---that I managed to somehow get through our HMO an entire team of excellent doctors, nurses and other medical professionals---and finally, that I'm still alive and kicking, 14 years after they first told me I had cancer. Breasts are highly overrated! LIFE is what counts and I'm so grateful you can still count me in!
