I had a carotid ultra sound done about a month ago. My ENT doc said that radiation to the neck can have affects on the carotids later on. I looked up info on the internet and printed out articles I found about radiation and affects on carotids. I sent this to my doc and had the ultrasound done per my request. I am glad I did that. I do have some plaque that could cause problems if it continues to build up. The doc put me on Lipitor.

Good thing you did. I've had radiation twice to the neck over 27 years. The last one done a number on me. Last summer, 5 years out of treatment, I had a TIA (mini-stroke) due to the interior carotid artery on my right side was occluded by 80%. I came close. I had a stent put in, now on the lipitor and an aspirin regimen as well as regular follow ups.

Wow! Glad you are okay now GregP. Did you have any idea radiation could affect the carotid arteries? Seems like the more time that goes by I keep learning about more problems that the past radiation can cause.

No I had no Idea. One day I had a dizzy spell and my left arm wouldn't act right, just a mild mini-stroke. I didn't even go to the doctor until I called my oncologist the next day and described the problem. She told me to get to an ER right away. They had to do several tests to find the problem, finally an ultrasound showed the restricted artery. There was mild plaque problem, but most of it was just damage from the artery being shrunk, squeezed or "occluded" they called it. I'm with you, I keep learning, every new little thing that pops up I call it my surprise gift of the day from cancer.

I would like to see if I could find anyone else out there like me with muscle deterioration post radiation and dropped head syndrome. It seems to be such a rare side effect. I want to know there is someone else out there like me that I could talk to. I feel like such an odd duck.with no one ever hearing of it hear, I had to be my own pt advocate and find answers for myself and enlighten the health car professionals. If you have these symptoms or know someone that does please contact me. I would like to find out how you are coping with a job and everyday life.
