I received the best news this week I've had since my surgery two months ago. My radiologist and oncologist at Shands are planning a treatment program to "cure" my cancer. My ampullary tumor was relatively small (about the size of a walnut), they found cancer cells in only two of the 11 lymph nodes which were removed, and no cancer in the organ tissues removed during my Whipple procedure. I know there are no guarantees for a "cure" but I am so very optimistic now. My doctors have experience treating this rare form of cancer b/c they get referrals from all over the southeast. I expect to start a radiation/chemo regimen on Dec 5 for about 6 weeks at Shands, followed by IV therapy for another 4 months. I am planning to stay at the ACS Hope Lodge in Gainesville during my treatment--what a gift! My incision is almost healed, and I'm feeling stronger everyday. Thanks to everyone who sent words of encouragement and support.

My cancer is Ampullary Cancer, a very rare form of the disease, so it's not exactly Pancreatic Cancer. My doctors performed the Whipple procedure. With only half my stomach, liver, and pancreas left, I'm trying to eat small meals and snacks 5-6 times a day to regain some of the 20 lbs I've lost since the surgery on 9/19. I'm fortunate to have wonderful, understanding family and friends to help me get through these days.
