    Acronyms

    Okay, I hope this isn't a stupid question. Is there a place on this website that lists acronyms and what they mean? I looked but didn't find. Often times I can figure out what folks are referring to but sometimes I can't. It would be nice to get the whole meaning.

      There are no stupid questions. I'm not sure there is a a list of acronyms on this site, We should ask Greg. If not, i would be glad to work on it. I think we need definitions for medical acronyms, ie NED=No Evidence of Disease, etc as well as other commonly used ones such ad DH=Darling Husband, etc

      Definitely not a stupid question. It took me a while to figure out
      dx = diagnosis
      tx = treatment
      Even as I type this, I wonder if I'm right. We definitely need a translation list on this site!

      I think a lot of other acronyms have become super common all over the internet and have migrated here. I don't know of an actual site about them. Some common ones:

      ITA = I totally agree
      BTW = by the way
      DS/DD/DH = dear son/daughter/husband
      IDK = I don't know
      ATM = at the moment

      I'm blanking on some more here! Are there specific ones you can think of? Post them and we'll "translate" : )

      As the others have said, "no stupid questions" Never will be, you ask anything you want. SueRae has volunteered to work on a list for us for future use. We will see what we can put together for you and everyone.

      Gosh, that would be great if there was a list. Thank you, everyone, for your responses and SueRae1 for volunteering to put something together. (NED was one of the ones that took me a bit to figure out!) SueRae1, would it be helpful if I posted them to your wall as I see them?

      TE- tissue expanders
      PS-plastic surgeon
      Onc-oncologist
      Exc-exchange(tissue expanders for implants)
      That's all I could think of for now. I'm glad you asked this question. It took awhile to figure out some of them!

      Here's a pretty good list posted on a bc (breast cancer) site:

      I haven't found such a list, but I know that BL stands for bi-lateral, HER2, ER and PR refer to hormones. ER is Estrogen receptors and PR are progesterone receptors. I shorten chemotherapy to chemo and radiation to radio because the words are long to type and I'm lazy. :-) Hope this helps some?

      NOS is quite common = not otherwise specified (often seen on reports, diagnoses)

      General acronyms you see on line (DH = dear husband) you can google, or look up on urban dictionary.com or netlingo.com

      I'd be more interested in seeing the medical/cancer related acronyms here.
      Having proofread/edited some medical research papers in my working life I'm conscious of style.
      So when I use acronyms I normally spell out the whole word(s) in initial appearance and then use just the acronym. For example: Side effects (SEs) or multiple sclerosis (MS). That way you can always look back to the first appearance in a post and have the definition right there.

      Want to add that your question is definitely an intelligent question, and one that I think is very helpful to the site.

      Definitely a need for this. I had to LOL as I read the previous posts....as I was just thinking the other day... "weird how many people have daughters they call DD". Thought it was a nickname...no idea it stood for DarlingDaughter. Also...when I first came upon this site...I was very confused by all the abreviations. Took quite awhile to 'tune into' them. Would be great to have an icon right on the page to click on for the translations.
